Microsoft Store or Regular Outlook?

Difference between ‘Office in the Microsoft Store’ edition and regular Outlook version

In June 2017 Microsoft introduced the new way to buy Office and placed it in Microsoft Store. However the new release is not just a different way to buy Office 2016 for Windows – ‘Office in the Microsoft Store’ has some important differences and disadvantages compared to the full Office 2016 desktop:

  • 32-bit software only
  • Poor COM add-ins support, in some cases not supported at all
  • No OneNote

In the short term, it’s happening because of 'Windows 10S'. 10S is a new, cheaper, version of Windows 10 which doesn’t run traditional desktop programs. Windows 10S is sold in Surface devices aimed at the education market.

The question is – should I use ‘Office in Microsoft Store’? - No, not unless you really must. Meaning you have Windows 10S. In fact, we don't recommend using it too, because most of our Outlook add-ins and 3rd party tools don't work with ‘Office in Microsoft Store’ version. This version can't deliver the full experience of the regular Outlook version, at least just not yet.

How to migrate data from old Outlook to the new one.

If you are using Office 365 account (which is Exchange), all data from previous Outlook version will be synchronized to the regular Outlook through the Exchange server automatically. However if you are using different email account type (such as IMAP or POP3) you will have to migrate data manually. IMAP account will synchronize all email folders automatically, however you will still have to migrate contacts, calendars and tasks manually. Meanwhile POP3 account will not synchronize anything and entire data will have to be moved to the new Outlook version manually.

To find out what email account type is in use, simply open Outlook and click on "File" located in the top left corner. All accounts are listed in the dropdown list under "Account Information". There can be several email accounts in Outlook and each account can have a different type. Moreover, each account has separate data files assigned. When you know what accounts you have in Outlook, you can decide which data you want to migrate. Outlook "Import/Export" feature is used for data migration.

How to install regular Outlook version instead of ‘Office in the Microsoft Store’ edition.

Firstly, how do you know what version is installed? To find it out, you have to open Outlook, then go to File > Office Account dialog. The About Outlook dialog will indicate the version:

Windows Store Outlook

If it says ‘Microsoft Store’ next to build number, it means it is the Microsoft Store version.

To avoid the confusion, it’s recommended to get rid of ‘Microsoft Store Outlook’ version before installing the regular one: simply go to Windows start menu, type ‘Outlook’ and right-click on Outlook icon, then choose ‘Uninstall’ option and it will be uninstalled. Before uninstalling it, make sure that you have exported the necessary data if you are using IMAP or POP3 account type. Detailed information can be found here: How to uninstall Microsoft Store Apps

All information about regular Office version installation can be found in official Microsoft webpage: how to install Office
